WHY DIAMOND GRINDING IS THE ONLY PREP METHOD WE USE

Surface preparation determines whether your garage floor coating lasts 15 years or peels in 15 months. Here is why we diamond grind every single floor — no exceptions.

If you have gotten quotes from multiple garage floor coating companies in Ohio, you have probably noticed that some mention "diamond grinding" and others say "acid etching." They sound like two equally valid approaches. They are not. The difference between these two prep methods is the difference between a floor that stays bonded for decades and one that starts peeling the first winter.

We diamond grind every floor we coat. We have never acid etched a garage floor and we never will. Here is why.

What Acid Etching Actually Does

Acid etching uses a muriatic or phosphoric acid solution to chemically dissolve a thin layer of the concrete surface. The idea is that the micro-pitting left behind gives the coating something to grip. In theory, it sounds reasonable. In practice — especially on Northeast Ohio garage floors — it fails for several reasons.

First, acid etching creates an inconsistent surface profile. The acid reacts differently depending on the concrete mix, its age, and any contaminants present. A section of floor with old oil stains won't etch the same as the clean section next to it. The result is an uneven profile where the coating bonds well in some spots and barely grips in others.

Second, acid etching cannot remove existing sealers, curing compounds, or previous coatings. Many garage floors in Twinsburg and surrounding communities have been sealed at some point — sometimes by the builder during construction. That sealer sits on the surface like a barrier between your new coating and the concrete. Acid does not cut through it. Diamond grinders do.

Third, the acid residue itself can interfere with coating adhesion if not neutralized and rinsed perfectly. On a 500-square-foot garage floor with control joints, cracks, and edges, getting every trace of acid residue out is extremely difficult. Residual acid left in a crack becomes a future delamination point.

How Diamond Grinding Works

Diamond grinding uses commercial floor grinders with diamond-segmented tooling to mechanically abrade the top layer of the concrete. The grinder removes approximately 1/16 to 1/8 inch of the surface, exposing fresh aggregate and creating a uniform texture called a concrete surface profile (CSP).

The International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) rates surface profiles on a scale from CSP-1 (nearly smooth) to CSP-10 (very rough). Most epoxy and polyaspartic garage floor coatings require a CSP-2 to CSP-3 profile for proper adhesion. Diamond grinding consistently achieves this. Acid etching typically produces a CSP-1 to CSP-2 at best — often below the manufacturer's minimum requirement.

We use planetary grinders with multiple diamond heads that rotate both individually and as a group. This produces an even, consistent profile across the entire floor. The grinder also connects to a commercial vacuum with HEPA filtration, so the process is virtually dust-free. Your garage, your vehicles, and your house stay clean.

Why It Matters More in Ohio

Ohio garage floors face conditions that garage floors in milder climates do not. Twinsburg averages over 50 inches of snow per year. Every time you pull your car into the garage during winter, you are dragging in road salt, calcium chloride, snowmelt, and moisture. This mixture sits on the floor, seeps into every imperfection, and attacks any weak bond between the coating and the concrete.

Temperature cycling makes it worse. A Twinsburg garage can swing from 15 degrees Fahrenheit on a January morning to 50 degrees by afternoon when the sun hits the door. These thermal cycles cause the concrete and the coating to expand and contract at different rates. If the bond between them is not mechanically sound — if it relies on the weak chemical grip of acid etching — it will eventually release. That is when you see the bubbling, flaking, and peeling that gives garage floor coatings a bad reputation.

Many of the concrete repair jobs we do involve stripping failed coatings that were applied over acid-etched surfaces. The concrete underneath is often in decent shape. The coating simply was not given a proper surface to bond to. Diamond grinding eliminates this failure mode entirely.

What About Old Concrete and Previous Coatings?

A large percentage of the garages we coat in Twinsburg, Hudson, and Macedonia are 20 to 40 years old. That concrete has absorbed oil, tire compound, road salt, and various chemicals over the decades. The surface is contaminated beyond what acid can address.

Diamond grinding physically removes the contaminated surface layer, exposing clean, virgin concrete underneath. It also removes old sealers, curing compounds, paint, and previously failed coatings. After grinding, the surface is clean, profiled, and ready for the primer coat to penetrate and bond.

We have ground off paint, glued-down carpet adhesive, tile mastic, and some creative DIY experiments. Whatever is on your floor, the grinder can remove it and get us down to clean concrete. Acid etching cannot do any of this.

Our Grinding Process Step by Step

When our crew arrives, the first thing we do is clear and inspect the floor. We note cracks, spalling, control joints, low spots, and any areas that need special attention. Then we set up the grinder with the appropriate diamond tooling for your concrete hardness — soft Ohio limestone-aggregate concrete takes a different diamond segment than hard gravel-aggregate.

We grind the entire floor in overlapping passes, ensuring full coverage. Edges along walls, around columns, and at step-downs are ground with a hand-held edge grinder since the planetary grinder cannot reach the last few inches. This is tedious, detail-oriented work, but it is essential. A failed edge is the starting point for delamination that spreads across the floor.

After grinding, we fill cracks with flexible polyurea joint filler, repair any spalling with epoxy mortar, and vacuum the entire floor with our commercial dust extractor. The result is a clean, uniformly profiled surface ready for the base coat. The coating bonds to this surface mechanically — it grips into the profile like Velcro — not just chemically.

This process adds time and cost compared to a quick acid wash. But it is the reason our coatings carry a 15-year warranty and our callbacks for adhesion failure are effectively zero. The prep is the product.

How to Know if Your Contractor Cuts Corners

When comparing quotes, ask one simple question: "Do you diamond grind or acid etch?" If the answer is acid etch, you know that contractor is cutting corners on the single most important step in the process. Some contractors will say they "grind and etch" — meaning they do a light pass with a grinder and then acid wash. That is better than etching alone, but it usually means they are not grinding aggressively enough to achieve a proper CSP profile.

A properly ground floor has a uniform, slightly rough texture that feels like fine sandpaper. You can see the exposed aggregate clearly. If the floor still looks smooth and shiny after prep, it was not ground properly. That floor will eventually fail regardless of what coating is applied over it.
