Soil around here holds a lot of clay. Clay holds water, and water under a slab pushes moisture vapor up through the concrete all year. You cannot see it. But if you coat over it, that vapor collects under the coating and lifts it off the floor in sheets. It is the number one reason a floor coating fails, and it is the step most cheap jobs skip.

So we test first. We tape calcium chloride kits to the slab, leave them for three days, and weigh how much moisture came up. That gives us a number in pounds per 1,000 square feet over 24 hours. If it comes back high, the floor gets a vapor barrier primer before anything else goes down. If it comes back low, we move straight to coating.

The other thing we plan for is freeze and thaw. Northeast Ohio runs through that cycle dozens of times a winter, and every pass opens existing cracks a little wider. We fill and repair those before coating, not after. A crack that gets coated over just telegraphs back through the finish in a season.
