What It Costs

A dry, sound basement slab is straightforward. One with elevated moisture needs a vapor-barrier primer first, which adds to the cost but is the difference between a floor that lasts and one that bubbles off in a year.
Why Moisture Is the Whole Game
This is where DIY basement epoxy fails most often. Basement slabs sit below grade, surrounded by soil, and in Northeast Ohio's clay-heavy ground with a high water table, moisture moves up through the concrete as vapor — even when the floor looks and feels dry. Coat over that without testing, and the vapor pressure pushes the coating off the slab in sheets. A hardware-store kit has no way to handle it.
The right process:
- Moisture-test the slab (a calcium chloride test or a relative-humidity probe) — not a guess, an actual measurement.
- If moisture is elevated, apply a vapor-mitigation primer that seals the slab before coating.
- Diamond-grind the concrete for a proper bond — same as a garage.
- Coat with the system that fits the room's use.
Skip step one and two and you're gambling with the whole floor.
